This was the first time a train of this weight has travelled through the Sydney network. Here’s some video of the train making its way out to Airly, loading, and then heading back through Sydney. Thanks to Centennial for granting permission to access the balloon loop at Airly to record the loading process. That was the only location where it was possible to capture scenes where all three sets of locos were visible.

Between April 1969 and September 1971, Union Pacific ordered 46 DDA40X units. These giant diesels were numbered with the “69” prefix in honor of the 100th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike, hence the nickname “Centennial”. This video is a compilation of some of those units as filmed by Stephen Harris.

On July 23rd, 2016, the Rotary Club of Mountain Top, PA sponsored an excursion over the Reading & Northern’s Lehigh Line from Mountain Top, PA (Penobscot) to Jim Thorpe, PA and return. It was a hot summer day, with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s.

The locomotive pulling this trip would be Reading & Northern’s 4-6-2 Pacific-type steam locomotive #425. The 1928-built engine ws assisted by one of the R&N’s GP39RNs, #2531, a rebuilt GP30. The trip operated over portions of the former Lehigh Valley Railroad, as well as the Central Railroad of New Jersey. The engine puts on an awesome show as always, and that Illinois Central three-chime “Steamboat” whistle will send chills up the spine of those trackside. Listen to the incredible sound as the locomotive sounds like a tornado roaring through White Haven!
